Moerdijk depot's journey towards sustainability serves as an inspiring example. Through dedication, innovation, and collaboration, the team is continuing to move towards a greener, more sustainable future.

Stolt Tank Containers (STC) Moerdijk depot is known for its focus on sustainable operations and efforts to protect the environment. Notably, the depot achieved an impressive milestone during 2023, making significant CO2 savings of 315,798 kg. This was accomplished using sustainable diesel supplied by Future Fuels. The diesel is ISCC-EU certified, ensuring adherence to the highest sustainability standards.

To remove a similar amount of CO2 from the atmosphere you would need to:

Plant 23,683 trees and grow them for 10 years, absorbing CO2 through photosynthesis.
Plant and grow 118,416 trees for one year, absorbing CO2 through photosynthesis.

The savings are also equivalent to:

CO2 emissions from charging approximately 34 million smartphones.
CO2 emissions from driving approximately 2,574,944 km in an average car.

This example illustrates the substantial impact of the depot’s sustainability efforts, emphasising the importance of their commitment to environmental responsibility.
We spoke to Depot Manager Dajo van de Corput to find out more about the sustainable fuel and other sustainable initiatives at Moerdijk.

Commitment to Green Energy Sources

“We’re dedicated to minimising our environmental impact by using green energy for our electricity, gas, and diesel consumption. These renewables significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to regular fossil fuels,” says van de Corput. “The depot’s transition to sustainable alternatives reflects our proactive approach to reducing our carbon footprint and promoting environmental stewardship. This dedication extends to every aspect of operations, from office spaces powered by green electricity to the heating of water using recovered energy from wastewater.”

Driven by the objective to achieve 50% of renewable energy by 2030, Moerdijk depot has been using green energy sources for the past three years, significantly reducing its carbon footprint, and achieving a high standard of eco-conscious operations within the industry.

“During our journey towards sustainable operations, transitioning to sustainable fuels has proven invaluable. Our commitment to eco-consious practices has enhanced efficiency, strengthened the company’s reputation and attracted like-minded partners and customers.”

Integration of Sustainable Fuels

"During the past three years, the integration of green energy sources has been an essential part of STC’s sustainability strategy," explains Dajo.

The strategy not only demonstrates the depot's commitment to environmental stewardship but also mirrors what is important to its workforce. By embracing sustainable fuels, Moerdijk has aligned its operations with its values, fostering a culture of sustainability among its employees.

By aligning with eco-friendly practices, we're helping to protect our planet. Something our colleagues and potential candidates for job openings also value. We've also bolstered our reputation as an environmentally responsible company, attracting customers and partners who share our values.

90% Reduction in CO2

One remarkable aspect of Moerdijk depot's sustainability efforts is its 90% reduction in CO2 emissions from traditional, fossil-fuel-based energy sources as a result of its move to mainly using energy from renewable sources. This achievement sets the terminal apart from many others in the industry.  "We have significantly reduced our CO2 footprint based on the energy we use because CO2 emissions have been compensated by the company we buy the fuel from – not common on the market yet," Dajo van de Corput explains.

Ensuring Quality and Reliability of Sustainable Fuels

"At Moerdijk depot, ensuring the quality and reliability of sustainable fuels within our operations is paramount," Dajo van de Corput emphasises. "We achieve this by collaborating with reputable and reliable partners. Not only do we thoroughly evaluate potential suppliers during our procurement process, but we also conduct annual evaluations to ensure ongoing compliance with our quality standards."

Other Sustainable Initiatives

In addition to its commitment to sustainable fuels, Moerdijk has introduced a wastewater treatment facility and measures to recycle both water and energy while minimising the use of additives and detergents. This has led to a more environmentally friendly approach to tank cleaning operations, a substantial reduction in waste and cost savings.

The new wastewater treatment plant is expected to decrease overall wastewater discharge by 70%, reduce the intake of fresh water by 21,000m3 per year and the discharge of wastewater into the public sewer from 30,000 to 9,000 m3 per year.

Furthermore, the chemicals used for cleaning tank containers are carefully chosen to be environmentally friendly and safe for employees. This holistic approach to sustainability ensures that every aspect of the depot's operations aligns with its environmental values, promoting a healthier workplace and a cleaner environment for all.

Long-Term Benefits of Green Energy Sources

"Our commitment to green energy sources has enhanced the efficiency and performance of depot operations in several ways," van de Corput explains. "By aligning with eco-friendly practices, we're helping to protect our planet. Something our colleagues and potential candidates for job openings also value. We've also bolstered our reputation as an environmentally responsible company, attracting customers and partners who share our values. Thus, the long-term benefits in terms of operational efficiency, sustainability, and employee engagement far outweigh any initial investment."

Focus on Total Energy Consumption Reduction

"Considering that the depot is already 90% CO2 neutral, our future goals focus on maintaining this while enhancing our sustainability efforts," van de Corput says. "We have a broader goal of reducing our total energy consumption by 15% and making our use of resources as efficient as possible.

“One of our next initiatives will be the installation of solar panels with the aim to generate 350,000 kW per year. We are also exploring ways to optimise processes such as using a less water for cleaning tank containers."

The Future is Greener

Moerdijk depot's journey towards sustainability serves as an inspiring example. Through dedication, innovation, and collaboration, the team is continuing to move towards a greener, more sustainable future. By reducing CO2 emissions, embracing sustainable fuels, and implementing eco-friendly initiatives, Moerdijk depot has not only reduced its environmental impact but also set a high standard for excellence in sustainability practices within the tank container industry.
