Jacob Appiah: inspired by an internship!
An internship with Stolt was a turning point for Jacob Appiah – providing him with the skills, experience and inspiration for his future career.
Jacob was a student at the time, on the Port Logistics Manager programme at Scheepvaart en Transport (Shipping and Transport) College in Rotterdam. His internship led to a deep interest in the tank container industry and tank container transportation and he was keen to take up a full-time position with STC.
Now an operations coordinator, Jacob’s responsibilities include a range of supply chain management tasks. He is responsible for planning and delivering all the logistics requirements for successful and cost-effective exports/imports of orders while meeting the stringent standards laid out in STC’s Quality Management System and, of course, striving to exceed customers’ high expectations.
Jacob ensures that vendor instructions are accurate and communicated in time, and that systems are updated and documentation dealt with accurately and according to regulations. He also manages any day-to-day operational emergencies and will quickly identify and resolve any supplier problems. In addition, he is busy keeping on top of accounting, billing and customer information, takes part in internal and external training, and assists operations supervisors and managers with specific projects.
“I appreciate that STC was confident in my ability and gave me the opportunity to develop myself from being an intern to a full-grown operator,” says Jacob. “The internship meant I was already familiar with the Company and the role and I saw it as a real benefit that I could start work straight away, based on the experience I had already gained.”
Jacob is full of praise for the friendly working environment at STC, adding: “I really enjoy working closely with my colleagues. I hope to continue working here for many years ahead and look forward to developing my skills further.”
